OUR STORY

Walrus and Carpenter Oysters’ farms sit in the pristine waters of Dutch Harbor in Jamestown, RI and Point Judith Pond in Narragansett, RI.

Walrus and Carpenter Oysters was started in 2009 by Jules Opton which grew from a small passion project to one of the most recognized brands in the state. The goal from the beginning has been to work with the best chefs and thought leaders within the culinary world. The approach is a mix of hard science with a commitment to sustainable seafood.

In 2013, Brad Boehringer joined the Walrus and Carpenter team and after a few years of gaining experience on the farm, he started Rocky Rhode Oyster Co in 2016. In 2023, after 14 years of running the company, Jules stepped aside and sold the company to Brad to focus on his growing family and to embark on new adventures. Walrus and Carpenter now offers our two oyster varieties: “Dutchies” and “Rocky Rhodes”. We are proud members of the East Coast Shellfish Grower’s Association and the Shellfish Growers Climate Coalition.

The farm’s main focus is quality not quantity. Our floating bag culture allows us to grow oysters with clean, hardy, shuckable shells while ensuring a consistent size and shape. Our team takes pride in our work creating a high quality, restaurant-ready product. No matter the conditions, we are committed to getting our chefs what they need, when they need it. We have a saying on the farm, “It don’t matter if it’s snowin’ or blowin’, we’re still goin’!”
